      <image:caption>Design Our Clients, a husband and wife, asked us to design a large estate home akin to the 19th century country estates in which they had both grown up within the same area. Our challenge was to accommodate the needs of a modern family whilst executing a genuine Palladian building, that would in time  be indistinguishable from that of an authentic and admirable counterpart. This called for a great deal of research with regard the period architectural language, proportional systems, detailing and finishing techniques. The experience has led us to further research on the golden section and has enabled us to apply this proportional system to our more contemporary projects.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Site White Oak is the last remaining parcel of a 93,000 acre plantation granted by charter from King George II in 1743. At the heart of the estate is White Oak Creek, a winding watercourse that breaths life to the surrounding 200 acres of fertile plateau. The golf course is accommodated in the sanctuary of this valley while the residential element rests upon the surrounding elevated 800 acres of forest and pasture land. The natural amphitheater like topography allows golfers a genuinely unobstructed restorative experience and simultaneously allows residents to enjoy elevated views of the central landscaping feature, the course. It has not been possible to find a more appropriate site for this kind of developement.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Community To encourage communal interactivity we threaded the nature trail network through each buffer area. Communal overlook towers of varying character and functions with gas light beacons at their pinnacle were placed in prominent positions within these buffer zones. We felt it important that residents could feel part of something greater than themselves when at White Oak. Each evening at dusk the beacons will illuminate from ridges and valleys between neightbourhoods across the entire acres. Somewhat Tolkenesque, this is one of our favourite images at White Oak</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The Design Solution One of our primary concerns in Master planning was to ensure that a strong sense of community and place was created within the residential zones. We wished to avoid the anonymous sprawl evident in so many of the precedents developments we viewed. Part of our solution was to define neighborhoods with landscaped buffer zones and this facilitate a sense of transition as on moves through the community. This was achieved by extending "tentacles" of landscaping from the central core, the golf course to the residential extremities the site.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Design The site for the proposal was once the coach house to no.9 of the Georgian terrace on Mount Street crescent. All that remained was an elegantly curving brick wall with granite capping in this quiet backwater of central Dublin. The original pedestrian and coach entrance had been blocked up. We proposed a simple building of contrasting smooth white render to rise up from the existing elegant base. We reinstated the main pedestrian opening and replaced the coach bay with a carport. Sleeping quarters are on the ground floor and open to the garden. to maximize views and sunlight the living space is situated at the first floor level and opens onto a substantial decking area.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>THE SITE Located in the basement of a Grade II listed building in Manchester's fashinable Northern Quarter occupied by Hatters Hostels in the upper floors, the building had originally been constructed in 1902as a Hat and Haderdashery building. Further to a very onerous planning process with the local authority we began construction on the Hold Fast Bar project in early 2014. The basement had previously been as an Indian restaurant. All original features, including glazed Victorial brick walls, original light wells coffered ceilings had been concealed.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Design Concept As the basement had previously functioned as the ‘engine room’ to the original Hat Factory above, with many cast iron service pipes and pressure dials for the now redundant heating and fire system, there was a very distinct industrial / even nautical feel to the space. As with much of our work, our initial response was to capitalize and enhance the spaces existing features and ambiance. Accordingly, we began to develop a concept that derived its precedence from the incumbent ‘underworld engine room’ ambience of the basement. Also, as the Bar was to contain a small cinema room we began to combine our love of film and looked towards the very atmospheric 1981 film by Wolfgang Peterson, Das Boot</image:caption>

We developed an atmospheric bar consisting of bespoke steel and timber detailing integrated with back lit etchings of unspeakable monsters from the worlds darkest underwater depths.  Since opening in December 2014, Hold Fast is successfully providing a place of escape and adventure to all the salty dog revellers of Manchester’s Northern Quarter.</image:caption>

This approach however felt contrived and at odds with thoughtful context of the Northern Quarter. We began to research a more authentic and quintessential American Diner.  Considering the prominent corner location we saw direct comparisons and possibilities with Edward Hoppers painting of 1942, ‘Nighthawks’. Considered the original American Diner we now had our source of inspiration and light to guide our vision.</image:caption>

A transporting environment is now created where Button black leather booths on olive wood carcasses form the perimeter  and critics have noted the resemblance of his paintings to film stills. Nighthawks and works such as Night Shadows (1921) anticipate the look of film noir, whose development Hopper may have influenced Like Hoppers Painting the Diner now acts as an all day beacon &amp; late night refuge welcoming the hungry and lonely of the NQ.       <image:caption>Pointillism and the perforated columns Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. The same technique is used here to recreate the classical orders but instead of using colors, this is being replaced by using different sizes of perforated dots in order to create an illusion of depth.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Shelbourne Social The brief was for a dining and drinking space that celebrated the restaurant’s unique and vibrant gastronomical offerings but which also set a relaxed and inviting tone, establishing a warm and animated locale for nightlife to the south of Dublin’s city centre. The interiors were designed in collaboration with 20.20 design, London, featuring a texturally and materially rich interior with carefully curated marbles, leathers, oak joinery, and a bespoke stained-glass installation by artist Emily Mannion and glass artist Michael Deane. Eccentric notes of colour, craftsmanship, and cosmopolitanism activate this lofty modern space.</image:caption>
